Buying a 1997 850 T5

Post by jaljamma »

Hi guys, I am looking to buy a 1997 850 T5 from a dealer in Michigan with 51000 miles, the car is in perfect condition. What is the fair market value for this car, I see them sold between 12000 and 7000, I am new to volvo, thanks for the help.

Excellent decision Sir. The only problem that I can pretty much guarantee that you'll have with the '97 model is the PCB board of the ABS module will crack due to heat. DON'T pay the dealer $600 for a new one. There is a guy over on the VS Forums by the username of Vitor that repairs the modules for $125. That board as well as this one are EXCELLENT resources for the Volvo owner. Please feel free to ask any questions you have about the car. Chances are, someone on the boards has the answer to your question.

The car is running very well, and wow what a ride. I smoked a BMW with no effort and you should have seen the looks on the driver face. Any way my only concren is how much i paid for the car, it seem that i over paid for it, Also it seem that the 850 T5 are rare to find, how many 1997 850 T5 made it to the USA?

1997 was the year that the least number of 850's were imported to the US, but I don't remember how many there were. It is also true that there are not many Volvo 850 turbo's on the road. I very rarely see them. It is true that these cars are very quick even in stock form, which surprises a lot of people. My car, which is healthily modified to put out somewhere close to 300 hp makes owners of V8 muscle cars very unhappy when they're obliterated by a family sedan.

You did not overpay, in my opinion. I would have taken that deal in a second. There aren't that many around with that mileage.

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... ight=tires <-- There was a big discussion about tires a few weeks back. The basic rule of thumb with tires is you'll have to compromise. Higher performance usually means less tire life and vice versa. Whatever you do, don't cheap out on tires. Your life is riding on them. Some good performance brands are Nitto, Falken, Toyo, Cooper, Kumho, Yokohama, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Michelin. If you're looking for long life and comfortable ride, you're best bet is to look at Continental tires.
