I have had my 740 Non-Turbo Rex/Regina Wagon since 2003. I don't the maintenance records from the previous (1) owner but suspect it was reasonably well maintained. I'd like to be able to depend on this car. How likely is it that the fuel pump is original?
The car odometer says 222K. Is there any simple way I can detect whether the pump is original or not? Is there any way to test the condition of the pump? If it is original, I think I'd like to replace it to prevent being stranded.

My opinion on anything mechanical is, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I can understand your concern about being stranded but I can't see how you would be able to test the pump to assess its possible life, nor determine how old it is without documentation. You have had the car going on 8 years so, obviously, the pump is at least that age. I have known pumps go much longer than that and I have known them fail within months of being fitted.

Having re-read this it isn't much help but I stand by my first comment.

On my 93 Rex/Regina, the fuel pump actually failed softly. For a period of 4 months or so my car acted like an old Ford with a clogged fuel filter. I took it to a couple of experienced Volvo folks, checked everything i could think of, replaced several of the minor electrical sensors, FINALLY paid the money and had my fuel pump replaced. and that fixed my problem. Now that pump had 165K miles on it. The pump before that had about 220 k miles, , but died suddenly and completely, (in my driveway of all places)
My advice, if you are worried about a failure, wold be to go ahead and replace the one you have now, and in 150K miles order a new one and keep it in your glove box until you need it.
