p0700 code on perfect transmission
A valet parked my 2001 s40 and got the key out of the ignition with the shifter still in gear (the button behind the shifter never popped out to allow the ignition to turn all the way off - sometimes you have to jiggle it - I don't know how he got it out). I had to put on the emergency brake, depress the shift lock and put the car all the way in park before the key would go back in. It then started and ran perfectly, as it always did, but I can't clear the code. It clears but comes right back after a few seconds. Do I have a simple solution available or must I bring it to the local dealer who charges $195 just to drive onto his lot. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
P0700 only tells you that there is a fault code stored in the transmission control module (TCM). Erasing P0700 does not clear the code in the TCM. Most scanners available to the DIY motorist won't read transmission codes so won't erase them.
You could try disconnecting the battery negative lead for an hour or so and see if that clears it, having the radio code if you need one.
In the UK most auto-electrical shops now have the facility to read and erase all codes, at prices a lot lower than the dealer. I don't know if that can be done in the US.
Bill.

Thank you. My wrench guy has an older machine that won't read tcm codes, but he is calling around to find someone who can.
