Intermittent Heater Fan

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Intermittent Heater Fan

Post by TRAustin2 »

I own a 2001 S80 that has a heater fan that only operates some of the time (either in Automatic on when you manually turn the fan knob). It started several weeks ago not working at all, then as you drive down the highway, all of a sudden it starts working and will work OK until you turn off the motor. Then when you start up the car sometimes it will work and sometimes not.

All other HVAC controls seem to work even the fan control lights work but the fan has a mind of its own. Any Ideas??

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

These symptoms usually point to the blower motor resistor starting to fail. This is a job that can be done by the DIY owner. The part can be obtained from one of our sponsors whose links appear at the top of the forum, a big saving on dealer prices.

If you need instructions for replacing it just ask.

This is from VADIS. It looks complex but is really straightforward. If I have forgotten to expand any of the green bits let me know.

This part can be listed as a resistor or as a power unit, it is the same thing. The part number is 8693262.

Hello. I have the same problem. Volvo have run the diagnostic and code CCM-001 is shown. They say I "require new fan and power unit" Can you tell me if this comes as one whole unit/part. Or do I need to search and buy 2 parts? I've come across this link to a guy who has put a short video (first one half way down page) of the replacement process online and it looks like just one part? Yet the VARDIS doc looks different? My S80 is a 2004 2.5T if that makes a difference. Hope you can help.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The video, which is for the 70 series, is good as far as it goes but it doesn't go far enough. The resistor/power unit sits behind the black cover that he wrestles with to get the blower unit out. The procedure for replacing the blower unit and its parts is the same for the 60, 70 and 80 series and the resistor, which is a separate part, is in the same place on all.

As you are in the UK don't use our sponsors as you will pay over the odds by the time you add on VAT, customs duty and Royal Mail handling charge. I always use Parts Gateway. They are agents for several Volvo, and other makes, new and used parts suppliers. Put in your requirements and the suppliers will contact you with price and availability. The service is first class and the prices are way down on the dealer.

Bill, thanks very much. FYI - Volvo wanted to charge £300 for the fan, £150 for the power unit. Total bill to supply and fit...... £586. Wonder what planet they think we live on!

We rarely advise going to a dealer because of the exorbitant prices. There are plenty of other places for parts and servicing.

Bill
My off again/on again blower fan is now off again. I just ordered the blower fan resistor thru Amazon for 111.60 plus 10.99 shipping. It should be here soon and I will install it thanks to your instructions. Hope this solves the problem.
