'88 240 Idiot Light....what does it mean?

Post by Too Much Reality »

I'm a new Volvo owner, bought an '88 240 because I always liked the way they looked. The car was well maintained by the previous owner ((however, no owners manual)) but I have had 2 idiot lights that come on and I don't know what they mean. Both located on the bottom right of the dash one was a "?" a question mark that came on when my fuel was low......but stayed on after I filled up. The second light is to the right of the "brake failure" light but looks like a light bulb with an "X" over it and it comes on every time I use the brakes. Any help in deciphering this swedish encryption would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

The light with a bulb with a "X" through it means you have a burnt out brake lamp or tail lamp- Check your barke lamps and tail lights.

The only thing that looks like the first bulb you describe in my manual is the Parking Brake light... Kind of looks like this: ((P)). But mine is a '91 940, and may have a different indicator for the same function. My guess is that if it came on when your tank was (almost) empty, it could be some sort of "low fuel" light. But again, it could be coincidence, and it is some sort of Service light- I would check fluids: anti-freeze, oil, washer fluid. But agian, someone else on this sight may actually know what it is.
