ignition locking

Post by mkennedy »

I have a 98 V70. Intermittently, the ignition will not turn to the start position. It seemed to happen after long trips(> 30 minutes). I wondered if the ignition was locked electronically as some kind of safety mechanism. However, I have recently had this occur while the car is cold.

The ignition switch does not seem worn or sloppy.

I would like to exhaust all possibilities before looking into replacing or having the ignition switch replaced.

Does anyone have any experience replacing an ignition switch. What are the major considerations to such a job?

Try moving the steering wheel (turning) next time this happens. I've found that (in cars in general) when the wheel is locked at max rotation, the key won't turn.

Thanks Mathew.

I have tried rotating the steering wheel and the shifting the transmission lever. Neither seems to have any effect.

I want to rule out the neutral safety switch or any ignition prohibiting switches before ordering an ignition. A dealer has quoted me about $250 for ignition parts and labor.

I have not had any luck locating a factory service manual. I have seen Hayes manuals. Any experience or advice on available Volvo service manuals?

Thanks
Mike

If it's the PNP switch or the other shift-related switch, the car may be setting codes, and that would tell you what the exact problem is.

Factory manual: have you tried your Volvo dealer?

I called the dealer about manuals:

Me: How about a manual?
Dealer: Sure but they are about $100
Me: They?
Dealer: Yes, there are 4 volumes.
Me: You mean $100 each?
Dealer: You betcha!
Me: Goodbye.

Then found a good but not great Haynes manual at www.books4cars.com. Try them.
