random engine light '04 s40

Post by danpaq »

I have an earlier model 2004 s40 and I have a situation as described:
Late Model 2004 Volvo S40: ~76,500 miles
Oil has 3700 miles on it: 4 months (Level is right in the middle)
s40 was mild in temperature (Maybe 1/3+ on the guage where 1/2 is normal temp)
Car was revved up to max RPM in 2nd gear... (automatic)
when the car was switched into 3rd gear the transmission "slipped" or something that caused the shift to be delayed and rough.
as soon as I noticed this I let go of the throttle and continued to apply even pressure to keep my speed up.
about 2 seconds later (maybe shorter, time slowed down) the engine light came on for a half a second, then after another second it came on for another second or two and I let off the throttle again to let the engine relax and the light went off for good. I drove it about 50 miles after this has happened and the light has not been on.

I assumed it was a lack of oil into the tranny so I am going to get my oil changed this week, if you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Ok so I have narrowed it down to 3rd gear. I was testing the engine today and I revved up to 4k+ RPM and it shifted into 2nd gear no problem. I was amazed that it was so smooth and then as I eased off the gas it shifted into 3rd and I got a rough kick or hiccup and has lead me to believe that the 3rd gear may be "injured". Is there a way I can get this fixed or would the entire transmission need to be replaced? The car hasn't even hit 80k miles yet and I would hate to replace the tranny a few years before the big ol' 105k mark comes around.

Please give me your thoughts, Thanks,
Dan.
