v8 XC90 trans fluid
v8 XC90 trans fluid
Can anyone tell me exactly what trans fluid is recomended for a 2006 XC90 v8 AWD. I keep getting info on the 2.5 etc etc etc. Im starting to have issues and want to drain and change the fluid. The dealer says you cant change it. Through a lil research I found the drain and fill torx. Im still a little sketchy on the location of the level torx, but I'll find it.

You need to use a fluid that meets JWS 3309 spec, this is supposed to be Toyota T-IV spec too. There are some fluids out there that the fluid maker states are compatible with several specifications including JWS 3309 and T-IV but maybe it is "iffy" to use those. Something tells me Splenda, Equal, and Sweet N Low are not exactly the same thing as sugar even though they are sugar substitutes and their makers say use them in place of sugar....
Mobil makes a JWS3309 fluid if you can find it.
The fill plug is below air cleaner assy on edge of gearbox and is a TX55. Remove the tx 30 from drain and then unscrew plug with a 17mm hex key or hex bit. Let it drain and then install the drain plug with the tx 30 left out. Add 3 quarts through fill and start and let it idle for 15 minutes at least. Add fluid through fill hole 8 ounces at a time until it runs out of plug. Screw in tx 30 with it running and then reinstall the fill plug with engine off (alternately put in 4 qts and let it run and see that some drains. IF you have engine off for a while before you drain then more like 4 qts drains. Briefer off period gets lesser quantity due to less torque converter draining. You will have to keep the air cleaner attached to everything so you can only move it enough to get access to fill hole, not enough to get EASY access.
The official procedure is to get fluid temp to 50-60C for the add it till runs out step. Unless it is really cold when you do this the fluid will be at that and temp and stay in that range for some time if it idles for over 15 minutes.

Mobil 3309 and Toyota type 4 both meet JWS 3309 spec. They are both fine. Amsoil makes an ATF that is JWS 3309 and it is my favorite performer in that trans.

Amsoil, hmmm. Yes, I know that this thread is old, but I want to give my opinion about Amsoil. I have been using Amsoil for everything from my XC90 to my Harley. However, I had two issues using Amsoil. Using Amsoil Primary fluid for my Harley was garbage because it caused the clutch plates to slip. This was verified by two different dyno tests after an upgrade in the engine. I called Amsoil to complain, and they basically told me the fluid can only be used for engines with no power upgrade (more like "go pound sand"). So that didn't teach me anything. So I purchased trans fluid from Amsoil for my 2005 XC90 V8, and I change the fluid in late 2017. The vehicle only had 109k. Well after a while of driving, I began to notice shift flares in 2-3 gear. In the the spring of 2018, I began to notice shuttering. I thought that my cv axles were going bad. Well after wasting a bunch of cash on new axles, the shuttering was still there. A more in depth inspection resulted that the shuttering is caused by the torque converter. This is a great truck, I live on flat land, and I do not tow anything with this truck. So is Amsoil the culprit in destroying my trans. We'll see. I plan on changing the fluid to see if I can save this baby. I will let you know.
