01 V-70 trans flush@ 155k(Thanks MVS)

Post by DBULL »

My 2001 V-70 with 155k developed a 2nd-3rd intermittent flare. This was three days ago,and this morning I performed a full flush with valvoline duramax fluid.Although the fluid on the dipstick looked pretty clean, what came out of the trans appeared completely black.I was a little skeptical doing the flush rather than the drain/fill method but saw this as the only way to completely change the fluid.I researched the valvoline fluid online and found that even though it hasn't been volvo approved it still meets their and toyotas specs and at $5.29/qt it was readily available. After several test drives I have found none of the "flare-up" symtoms previously noted. As near as I can tell this was the first fluid change this car has ever had and the trans appears to be the original. The b-4 upgrade was done at 121k and somewhere down the line I'm sure the software upgrade was done.I drained and replaced 4 qts of fluid in the trans and pumped and replaced 8 qts from the upper radiator connection(2qts at a time). The fluid was cherry red by qt 11.My materials=7ft of 3/4od clear tubing($.79/ft) to plug into the radiator(I rounded the edge to make it easier to push in) and 12 qts of fluid.I used an old towel under the hose connection to catch what little spillage there was when I disconnected it.I did have a little overflow from trying to add fluid too fast at the fill tube. This is a fairly simple job and I would encourage anyone to give it a chance before springing for a trans replacement. Thanks MVS for your help and solid advice.David Bull

Nice job and congrats. It is amazing what new fluid will do.
