climate control issues

Post by crypta »

Greetings!
Recently bought a used 2005 Volvo S40. Seems to be a gem of a car save 2 issues.

1:Climate control. I feel stupid for not checking this before signing on the dotted line but it was cold outside and it slipped my mind to check the A/C  but on to the issue at hand. The air will only blow hot, almost seems too hot, cannot redirect airflow from the front vents. Also passenger seat heater does not work. The buttons light up for respected air ducts but would not work. Took it to Volvo Dealer and I was told the following was/could be the issue. I am typeing the mechanics exact words per the service receipt.

"Cause: CCM-00700 LIN BUS DTC, FAULT TRACED, RELOAD CCM SOFTWARE AND CALIBRATE, DTC RETURNED NO COMM WITH TEMP AND DIST ACTUATORS. NEED TO REMOVE DASH TO REPLACE DAMPER MOTOR AND CHECK WIRING. ESTIMATE $961"

now he reloaded the ccm and it will now distribute air to desired ports (kinda, it still comes out the front vents while on the other positions but not as strong) but still blowing very hot. so anyways that diagnosis/service cost $127. I dont wanna put another grand in the car and was wondering how hard it is to do this job myself? I'm semi mechanically inclined, but have no idea what I am looking for or even how to take apart the dash. where is the damper motor? actually he said it had 3 or 4 damper motors. do those come in one unit or are they seperate? (would it be easier to justr buy the assembly rather than having to tear into a box or whatever trying to find out which motor is bad)? Are there any books that have pictures that can walk me through this repair? The weather is turning warm and it gets very hot here in peak summer so i really need to get this fixed asap! Any info will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

problem 2: not really that big a deal but the car has very poor throttle response. I get a lot of lag when pushing the gas from a dead stop, and when getting back on the gas after lifting the throttle. Throttle seems normal if i want to accelerate more while under power.... it just lags real bad after lifting/starting. The car was bought in Germany and shipped back to the states... the carfax said the fuel or throttle something or other had been reprogrammed. If I rem right, it said it had been reprogrammed twice. My main concern is the climate control but any ideas on this would help too. Thanks again.

RE the climate control. I had similar issues (blow really hot when ordering cold, wrong temperature, fan blowing at incorrect speeds.) My local non-dealer Volvo garage looked into the issue and diagnosed a new climate control unit (or module or CCM.)

Did a lookup on volvoparts.com to see what MSRP is afer they'd quoted a certain amount and got a real case of sticker shock. Essentially a week's net wages for the part and installation. Went looking for help and used parts. Used CCM on eBay set me back $114 (about a half day's wages) and either here or another site had a photo essay on how to install it. Two hours after getting the part, it was in and working.

Downside of the wonky CCM running for about two months was that I appear to have fried the blower fan motor resistor, another $80.

Re your throttle response. Have your garage check the carburator and inlets as well as the programming. You may be in need of a clean and service rather than repairs.

That's why I deal with the local non-dealer Volvo garage -- they're so busy that they're fully loaded all day long because of honesty and knowledge, plus telling the customer what's wrong and prioritizing it.

Now on our third Vovo in the family (850, then S40 and then my V40) and all three cars have spent more time at the LNDV garage than at the dealer.
