850 stalling

Post by Norm Peterson »

1994 850 (US) Automatic; 148,000, sometimes stalls at idle, but usually restarts immediately, though, occasionally, one must wait several minutes. Otherwise, the car runs beautifully (however, my wife claims that the car has stalled while moving).

It could be an early sign of the fuel pump failure that's coming soon ...mine failed at 138K miles..and that was the symptom; My mechanic told me my fuel filter was clogged that would have caused to fuel pump to overwork thus failing.

If such were the case, would not the car accelerate poorly?

diyer97,
If the filter was partially clogged and stressing the pump, it seems the car would not accelerate well.

Could be a fuel pump relay. Or the fuel pump itself - and no, not necessarily. Most of the time they fail without warning, though, not work intermittently.

Next time it happens or won't start back up again, remove relay 103 from the upper fusebox panel (it's under the black plastic cover) and jumper pins 15 and 78 with a paperclip. If it starts right up, your fuel pump relay is to blame and needs to be replaced.

Agreed . That would have been the case but as far as I remembered my car started up fine and ran well ; there was not any hesitation in picking up speed . We experienced one stall at the stop light and one failed to start up after shutting down but it started right up after couple minutes in both cases and ran fine afterward. Then we started using 91Octane gas and no more stalls for about 18 months so I thought
the high octane gas has cured the problem then I noticed it misfired a couple times in a pretty quick fashion then ran fine. And
about a month after these misfiring one more morning it failed to start; however it did the second try. One week later it died
at my work place parking lot.

No misfiring; better performance on 91.

Thank you,

Where, exactly, on my 850 (NA) is the fuel pump relay (103?); is it under the plastic cover (with two vertical tabs that seem impossible to move) in front of the fuse box?

Car would not start this morning; I jumped pins 15 and 87 on relay 103 (there is no #78) and the engine would not start (there is spark from the coil). Engine ran perfectly yesterday evening.

Is there fuel pressure at the end of the rail/do you hear the fuel pump in the tank running when you turn the key to position II?

Remove the blue cap at the end of the fuel rail and depress the valve to check for pressure.
