Power Steering rack, please post your experiences..

What happened? Did it start leaking? Did it make a horrible noise? What mileage did it start? When did it need to be replaced? How much was the cost? Where did you get it repaired? How much was the repair? Has it happened since?

I will start...

Mine started making a groaning noise on a Sunday afternoon @ 5pm drove home for another 40 miles. Parked it in the driveway and opened the power steering cover to find foaming fluid. put another pint in to fill it up. Parked it for the night. next morning nothing, drove to work 15 miles. By the time i got to work my PS rack was spitting out fluid from the pass side boot.

Cost for a new(used) rack: $275 erievovo.com lifetime warranty
Costr for the repair $250 plus fluids
Time for the repair: 2days to get the unit, 3hrs for the job. book says 7.5hrs
Mine died at 152,150 miles done know if previous owner had it repaired before.

problems encountered:
my car has variable assist.
rebuilders are not all the same.
fcpgroton uses a rebuilder in north carolina called atlantic something.
you will find autozone, pepboys, ect will not have it and will need to order it or they want you to take yours off so they can rebuild it.
on a good day with a coupon fcpgroton is the cheapest, could get it for a little as $215 delivered (rebuilt unit)

i opted for the erievovo unit since it came with inner and outer tie rods, they had 4 units on the shelf and they could describe what to look for so i know EXACTLY what i had and what is going back in. this is precious since it books out for 7.5hrs of labor, i am not paying twice for the work to be done and have a pissed off mechanic. For a good used one that is $60 more shipped and it is the RIGHT part i took the used part. plus i am saving the world by recycling :)
