Radio back lights 2004 xc90 awd

Post by tailor »

Hello to all

I have an issue with the radio back lights on this "new to me " vehicle. The Lcd screen has no illumination at all, all the other lights and dials around the unit are Illuminated. I cannot see the radio station or any of the details that would ordinary be displayed on a working system. The radio works, as well as the CD, the unit does not have navigation. I was trolling about a week ago and came across "how change the back lights", but I cannot find the instructions anymore, can anybody direct me to that page........it may have been on another forum

If the 850 HU back lights work in a similar fashion, I would think the the back lights behind the Lcd are the ones that need changing. Am I correct in this assumption or just out to lunch?
Anybody had any similar experience on this issue or can offer some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Just a report back, I had the display come on for about 1 minute,
thereafter the display showed what I think is an error message. The "error
Message" stayed on until I turned the car off.
411 appeared on the display, the display is now dead again.
Anyone have any ideas?

Just a report back: I spoke with BBA in Canada, they told me their supplier of ICM modules can no longer deliver to them  so in true vulgarian vernacular I am SOL, for the moment anyway
I have read that if I can get my grubby little paws on another unit, that works, I can harvest the ICM and swap it out with my broken ICM. This is all in an effort not to have software and dealer upload/involvement .
I also called Eerie who informed me that they do not know of anyone who has had success in getting a salvaged unit to work in a different car .

More to follow I am sure.

Success!!!

I manage to procure a 2nd unit, same year, also single cd changer and no navigation. I bought it from the scrap yard for $130.00. A new unit was quoted at 900.00 plus fitting and software and tax, a re-furbished unit was 599.00. I figured that if the worst case scenario came to fruition, it did not work, I could return it for credit  :D .
So, in following the detailed instructions for changing of the radio back lights, found here: http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread ... &p=1656277
I proceeded to remove the radio section with the controls, after disconnection of the battery and having the key in position 1
The only items that I disconnected were the two connectors at the back of the radio/Icm module unit itself. I left the CD player and the AC unit well alone as there are more than enough warnings about SRS lights being tripped.
There are four Torx screws at the back of the unit, once undone and with the depressing of the side tabs, both sides, the radio will separate from the housing frame. From here on it was a case of changing the unit and re-assembly. Total time 35 minutes.
Reconnection of the battery with the key in position 11, a few sparks but no SRS .All is good, now I just need to hook up the ipod :)
In summation it would appear that some units are indeed plug and play and the change without dealer intervention is possible. I have read that if the same type of sound unit is swapped out you will be ok. This is by no means a definitive statement. I am sure that for every success there are a few failed attempts as well.

Here is another site that offers additional info: http://volvopartsearch.com/blog/?cat=147

I would welcome any additional experiences being added to this post, after all, we are trying to help each other out.

I too am a "new to me" XC90 owner. A 2005 T5 with the Premium Sound (no DVD, No Nav and no Dobly or Sub). I bought the vehicle with the display not working but all audio (Radio and CD) as well as the Park Assist and other functions all working properly.

I tried fuses, wiring harnesses, battery pulls, etc but eventually gave in and took it to the dealer to see if a software flash would help. They also traced through various possibilities and eventually diagnosed the ICM needs replacing. Parts, labor and software came out to be $1,300 USD.

I took the the web and found a second hand unit on eBay for just over $300 shipped. It comes with a 30 day warranty and 7 day return policy so I thought it would be a good try. Swapping the unit was fast and easy but unfortunately when I put it all back together the new unit didn't even fire up. I'm going to try the dealer again for a software flash, but as of now mine was not a plug and play swap. :-(

What ever happened with your DOA ebay radio? Was it a faulty part or a software flash needed? I just did the same thing, got my new (to me) radio and nuthin. My radio ID part numbers are the exact same (manufactured the same month) but I get absolutely nothing. I just want to know this is a doa unit, or that i can get it fixed by a software flash.

Thanks!

I had to get the unit back to the seller for an exact number replacement. The dealer gave me three number options that match my VIN. The original replacement I received did not match any of those. Once I had a matching number unit it was plug and play. Software flashing did not help the non working units or improve usability of the new refurb.
