We're not in Kansas anymore...

Post by jblackburn »

We're not in Kansas...so what the heck is up with all the tornadoes on this side of the country then?! I've never seen this kind of bad weather happen so much as it has this year.

I guess Blacksburg has been lucky to avoid them all, but there was one just a few weeks ago in Pulaski, VA (further down in the same county that I work in) that ripped through town. A few weeks ago, NC got hit hard around Raleigh. Last night, there were reports of tornadoes all around us - and our air raid sirens were going off all night. There was one down in Farmville, another in Bland county (one up from us), and one that traveled up the I-81 corridor for a bit around 1:30 AM.

Death tolls are still coming in from the storms that came through last night, but something like close to 200 people were killed in Alabama and 8 in VA so far. I sincerely hope that no one here was affected by that storm or lost friends or loved ones from it.

On our last visit to the US we were about 100 miles up the road from a tornado and saw the aftermath the next day, as we drove through. It was hard for us to fully comprehend what had happened. We don't have major tornadoes in the UK. The last one I remember was about four years ago and it did very little damage, some minor injuries and, thankfully, no fatalities.

Our thoughts are with the people who have suffered any sort of injury or loss due to these storms, but especially with those who have lost loved ones.

I don't know what is up with the weather lately. Even up here in Jersey we have been getting small tornados which is odd because we almost never get them at all. The last time I looked, I read the death toll is now up to over 280 people in Alabama. This is so sad and my prays are with them.

We had quite a few of them in our area last year. It came to the point where you really wouldn't think much when the sirens went off as it was becoming fairly regular.

The small town of Dundee, about 15 miles east of us, got destroyed by one last year. Several had touched down within 10 miles of us, but we've been getting lucky. If shit hits the fan, we can go in the basement and hope for the best.

That must be an experience I don't think I want to go through. Jersey is not the best place in the world to live in but at least I don't have to deal with some of the natural disasters that some people deal with every year.

Oh, you've never heard of the TV show? Watch it for 5 minutes some time; I guarantee it will make you want to hold a gun to your head.

Though you might already kill off brain cells just by watching it without the help of said gun...
