Bad CBV or Vacuum Leak???

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Bad CBV or Vacuum Leak???

Post by T_Bone »

Just had the timing done by Volvo, went ahead and replaced tensioner (Volvo), idler (GMB), belt (hecho en mexico), & Water Pump (Volvo) as well as the Aux belt.

Originally the tensioner was also GMB but it seized up a week after and my timing jumped a tooth and it started running really crappy. Took it back and they replaced it for 200 bucks plus the Volvo part.

I also had DSS drive axles installed up front.

Here's the deal. I can hear the belt area running a bit rough (like hard rubbing perhaps??) It's just not quiet like it used to be.. I wouldn't quite say its squeaking though.

Also, when I step on the gas I can hear a rushing air sort of sound and when I step off the accelerator I hear the "whoosh" sound. I can only hear it with the music off and the windows up, and I can't hear it inside the engine bad when the vehicle is in park revved up.

Any idea what might be going on?

Thanks.

No one in the community has ever heard a whooshing sound suddenly start out of nowhere?? It sounds like rushing air when I'm steady on the gas and then it sound like spooling turbos when I get off the gas, but I've never ever heard it before... Coming from drivers side.

Anyone?

I am having the same problem in my 1999 S80 T6 as well, My CEL came on after about a week of it going on with P1237 - Secondary Fuel Circuit Fault, which is controlled by the Turbo Control Valve. I replaced all the vacuum lines attached to the valve but still have the same problems so will be replacing the valve. Looking at the the HD replacement from IPD to replace it to see if that will solve my problem. I also am getting a surge while I have my cruise set, it is kind of annoying but hopefully I will get it fixed soon. Hope this helps

I really haven't gone anywhere, I have a friend who owns a shop and sometimes I let him do the funner things I don't want to mess with.
As for the sound, check the pipes from the air box to the turbos and from the turbos to the air to air cooler, I found a loose hose going from my blow off valve from the pressure side to the intake for the turbos, Still have some noise but it is less prevalent. Now I am going to check all the other hoses for leaks to see if that helps.

Update on the noise. I had my car checked out for the noise which sounded like it was coming from the engine compartment. When punching the gas I would hear a noise kind of like an exhaust leak or air leak. When I would downshift or lift my foot too fast I would get a noise that I thought was the turbos "clicking" almost sounded like a fishing reel noise wise.
The noise was located in the second resonator and the noise echoes into the engine compartment. My mechanic had to do a double take when he was delivering the car the sound projects itself so well. I am looking on getting a delete pipe for the resonator for an inexpensive fix and hopefully get a better tone out of the car.
Hope this update helps someone experiencing a similar condition.

I did replace the turbo control valve which helped in the power department but didn't fix the noise. I got the IPD HD control valve replacement, just have to make my own mount for it but it works. Just an update to a previous post. Just FYI IPD rocks, called and ordered it, was delivered the next day.

Did anyone resolve the problem that t_bone described as:

"When I step on the gas I can hear a rushing air sort of sound and when I step off the accelerator I hear the "whoosh" sound. I can only hear it with the music off and the windows up, and I can't hear it inside the engine bad when the vehicle is in park revved up. "

I bought a 2005 v70 recently, drove it for 2 days and then I had them rebuild the transmission. Since then I hear exactly the same sound - I THINK the sound was not there before.

t_bone, any news on it, and, are you sure that sound only showed up after the other repairs?

My car is with the transmission guys since 2 weeks because I keep sending them around the block because of that sound ..

Thanks!
