2005 V70 camshaft timing
2005 V70 camshaft timing
I am pretty sure I messed up. I just purchased this wagon it had 135,00 on it and the previous owner said it needed the timing belt changed. I lined up the cams and could not see the crankshaft mark. I made my own marks in several places to make sure I put it back the way it came apart. THe previous owner said the belt had never been replaced, yet for 135,00 miles it still looked brand new. I put on a new belt, tentioner, and idler pulley. Iturn it over by hand two revs and my marks still lined up. I took out on a test drive and did fine at first, then it start to surge at an idle and then the check engine light came on. Took it back home checked the marks and everything was like I marked when I took it part. I removed number one sparkplug and rotated the crankshaft to top dead center and the crankshaft mark was at the twelve oclock position and the cams were about 5 slots off. This where I think I messed up. I slipped the belt off of each cam sprocket and rotated the back to where they needed to be. I think I may have messed up the CVVT position? If so how do I get it back? Help!

the timing mark on crank is not TDC.
If you look just behind and down on the serpentine belt pulley as you turn crank you will see a cast in mark show up. Then look down the depression between two "teeth" on the crank t belt pulley and you will see the mark on oil pump.
You may have to turn the crankshaft two more revolutions if the cam marks are not up when the crank is in correct place.
You may see the cam marks not straight up (on this engine straight up, on earlier engines the marks are 45 Degrees right on exh and 45 degrees left on intake from straight up, and you can then see if you are off. You can't have messed up the CVVT orientation unless you removed the plug in center and then loosened the bolt under the plug.

what exactly does the mark on the oil pump look like. when I look at it I see a casting angling to the left and a shorter one angling to the right, both connecting to a casting that arcs the same radius as the crank gear. I can try to take a picture. I am used to engines have a definate mark and I am not seeing one on this engine.

the pointer mark on oil pump would be straight up centerline of engine. The engine is tilted back at a few degrees angle so the mark is not pointing straight up relative to the ground but very close.
The mark is a line about 10-12 mm long.

The mark I am going by on the crank is on the hub part of the gear where the harmonic balancer bolts on. Between two of the ears that the balancer bolts to is a rib that sticks up about a 1.5 mm. Is this the correct mark?

yes, that is the mark. for further confirmation if you follow the depression between the two "teeth" the mark splits, you will see a notch on the back of each of those teeth.
If cam gears to hub and hub to cam relationships are not disturbed the worst it can be is just some teeth off on timing gears. Well, the absolute worst is bent valves but you have several teeth of leeway before that happens.

Today I pulled the balancer back off and lined everything back up to the marks that I put on when I took it apart. I then noticed that there is one tooth missing on the crankshaft where the bottom gear slips on. I am thinking this the timing mark as it lines up perfectly with the line on the oil pump. Is my thinking correct?
I talked to Volvo tech at the dealership and he told me line up the little tick marks on the engine side of the crank gear, this is six teeth off from where I took it apart and the car will run but sounds so bad I shut it right off. Went back to the original settings. Help, why is it throwing a code, 0017?
