Need to get my idle back...
Need to get my idle back...
My 1999 Volvo V70 GLT has trouble idling. Normal idle has always been around 800 rpm. It will start out there and then fluctuate up and down between 1100 and 200 rpms. Eventually (ten to twenty seconds or so) it will bog down to 200 rpms, the shift light will flash a couple of times and it will stall out. I can promptly restart it. This behavior happens while in park or while driving (so I stall out at intersections a lot). A friend told me it was the Mass Airflow Sensor, so I replaced mine with a new one. No change. What should I look at next. The idle control valve? Other ideas? Anyone?

First of all, unplug the MAF and try running it, see what happens. It does sound like your MAF is the issue, but it's better to test than to guess. Also, the new MAF you installed, is it OEM or an aftermarket one? Certain components must be OEM, the MAF is one of them. Like I said, try running the car w/o the MAF and see if anything imporves.

More likely an ETM going south. Check out Don's ETM room in the forum list for some reading about the electronic throttle body.

It is a Bosch MAF. I unplugged the MAF connector and voila! the car idles and runs solid (except the fan stays on).... so, I got a bad MAF? The Bosch unit looks exactly like the original... I assumed it was OEM. Was I wrong?polskamafia mjl wrote:First of all, unplug the MAF and try running it, see what happens. EDIT - I was wrong... the car has started backfiring and lugging with the MAF unplugged...

OK. I took the Bosch MAF back and got another replacement. Installed it this afternoon. Ran the car for about five minutes and it found idle at 900 rpm. Drove car for 20 minutes. I have started it several times since, idle seems fine. Thank you for the advice. I appreciate being pointed to the ETM info too. Just glad I may not have to replace mine (yet).

Someone correct em if I'm wrong, but from what I could see the OEM part is a Bosch.
