I recently had my rear brakes done on my 96 850 wagon at a shop I have used for repairs. I get a labor discount as a part of the deal when I bought my car last year. Recently their work has been less than great, but they have saved me a ton of cash on the timing belt repair, and pcv repair....
Back to the point. They recently did a rear brake job including replacing a warped rotor. My brakes make more noise now than before! I took the car back and he said he cleaned the rotor off and lubed it up good, which took the noise away for about a day until the lube wore off. I also have a loud POP noise when I engage the e-brake. The POP comes when the brake is pulled almost to its highest point. I have read the repair database and am assuming my shims need replacing.
I have a few available options as I see it..
1. take the car into to a brake repair place and get a diagnostic done
2. take the car back and have them figure it out
3. replace the shims myself (seems easy) Don,t know about the e brake though...

The shims are indeed easy on the rear pads but they should be brand new if the shop just did the pads. The noise could be coming from the brake pads themselves, so you may have to replace them - do you know what brand you have now? Check out Akebono pads; a bit more $$ but well worth it.
The popping e-brake noise could be from dust & dirt build-up in the area. If you're going to attack the shims, it doesn't take much more effort to pull the caliper and rotor, then inspect the e-brake pads. The pop could also be coming from the cable which needs a bit of lube.

Not sure what they used, but I am sure they were cheap. This is my last visit to the shop, I need to find a more specialized Volvo shop for this specific reason.
I am assuming there is a repair guide for the pulling of the caliper and rotor? Will I know what the e brake pads are?

Usually brake repair is simple. Any mechanic should be able to get that right. I don't think you need a Volvo specialist to do brakes. Not sure what they did. But, if you have the skill and the will to dig around in there you might figure it out.

You did not get into your brake job much but the bottom line is if you paid for new pads/rotor work and your brakes sound worse and do not work properly than bring it back. I promise you your car does not require rotor lube.
in the repair database is info on ebrake and shims. I think you need to have a friend over to pull on the lever in the car while you hold the piece that moves the ebrake pads to see if it moves easily and therefore rules out bad cable. I just did my right cable and it is doable. feel the hub to see if one of the ebrake pad is rubbing and the rotor to check for seized caliper. your car is 16 yrs old and either needed new caliper or rebuild with new seals. also brake fluid replacement.

Pulling the caliper is super easy - two bolts (15 or 17 mm if I recall) and it's off. Just be careful becasue it's got a hard line to it, so get a jack stand or something to hold it close to the mouting points. Pulling the rotor is a bit more tricky becasue of the e-brake pads, but quite easy once you get he hang of it.
Here's how you do them:

Update...When I took off the tire just to look at the rear brake I noticed a line around the rotor all the way around, not deep but enough to scratch the surface. These are new rorots and pads, does this change anything?

Where's the line - inner, middle or outer edge of the rotor? Can you post a pic?
