Volvo Repair Database '05 S40 cabin filter install (US version)

Post by buddyjim »

1st of all I want to thank "Matt" or whom ever runs this forum. It has helped me enjoy working on both my 05 S40 & my wife's 04 V70. Can't tell you how much I like working on these cars. It is fun! :)

Well.....this weekend I replaced the cabin air filter on my 2005 S40 2.4i. I can honestly say it was one of the more difficult things I have done to my car due to the lack of room to manuver & the @#$%^ lock nuts that hold the gas pedal on.

The most important piece of advice I can give you is to lay a blanket or a small pillow on the driver seat rail base (door side) so it doesn't dig into your ribs. It still hurts after 2 days.

I also recommend replacing the lock nuts with non-lock nuts. Getting to the top 2 lock nuts & putting them back on was difficult.

Getting the filter door on/off was not too bad.

Getting the filter in/out also not too bad. Filter had never been replaced & was full of junk/no air flow at all.

I replaced with a carbon version from IPD. BIG difference in air quality noticed on first drive post install.

It's a worth while job but plan on 70-90 min of tedious difficulty & if you're over 40 like me plan on a couple of days of a sore back.

Oh, I was lucky. I didn't drop one single thing like I usually do. Dropping a nut or extension could make this a very long job.

Good tips Jim. I can't believe you have to take the gas pedal off to switch out the cabin filter. That's nuts.

Just call me Matt :-) ... not a problem providing the site. It puts food on the table and helps others. Perfect combo.

i'm with jim on this one. i thought that changing the oil on this car was over the top (because of where the filter is). But after changing the cabin air filter today, boy was i wrong. and you're right about it taking close to 90 min and being sore afterward.

i seriously hate the guy who made the design decisions for this car. so many aspects are just too much work. my sister's 2001 s40 is much easier to do routine maintenance on

Can anyone tell me how to locate the cabin air filter on a 2003 S40 - I understand it is on the passenger side. Thanks

Well i know where it is on a 2001 s40. it's really quite simple to find.

On the 01, it's located directly under the glove compartment on the passenger side. There are two screws holding the cloth cover material on on the underside of the glove compartment. Remove those 2 screws and take the material off. You will see a long, narrow piece of plastic running parallel to the length of the car. I think there may be only one screw holding the cover piece in. Once you remove the screw, the piece holding the cabin air filter in should just slip off. Once off, the CAF should just slide out. Remember to make note of which side is dirty and make sure you put in the new CAF facing the right direction for air flow purposes. Reverse steps to put it all back together.

I would post pictures, but the 01 that i usually have access to is out of town.

I hope the 03 is the same as the 01. Best of luck.
