CVVT timing 2000 XC70

Post by edbrig »

My mechanic recently removed the cvvt solenoid from the cam and did not mark the exact location where it needed to be re-installed. As a result he said that the car is running sluggish now because that solenoid is "shifting". Does anyone out there have any advice on how to time that so that the vehicle will run smooth. Thanks so much

Besides "clean gasket face" and tighten the screws crosswise to 10 Nm, there are no instructions about positioning the VVT solenoid.

EDIT: did he remove the CVVT solenoid (under the plastic engine top cover next to the #1 spark plug), or the VVT hub on the exhaust cam?

Either way, why would he remove something like that and not at least mark it. Is he a volvo tech?

You can't mark the hub relative to the cam on CVVT cams. The camshaft end is entirely masked by the CVVT unit and inside the bolt hole for the TX55 bolt the cam is 1/2 inch down in a 1/2 inch diameter hole.
Locking the cams with the fixture and installing the CVVT using the proper procedure is the only correct way once the initial position is disturbed.

I think I had some of my facts wrong. This is what he did - Pulled Cam cover and locked cam in place. Put new timing belt and water pump and put cam cover on. He never removed the CVVT hub from the cam. We need to know how to set CVVT hub to correct timing mark. Is there a reference point? Please help - and no he is not a volvo mechanic. Thanks for all the help guys
