Volvo 840 Turbo?

Post by poor_volvo_owner »

Anyone out there ever think about putting an engine from a 740 turbo into a 850?

With gas approaching $5 bucks a gallon, I'm wondering why not try getting a few mpg's more. A front wheel drive 4-cylinder turbo, w/manual 5-speed would rock! There seems to be quite a few 850's with blown engines, and the 740's are plentiful in my area too.
(Seattle). Please, nobody say S40--that definitely isn't the right answer. ;-)

You'd be dropping a RWD engine configuration into a FWD car - I doubt it would fit sideways. Plus the old redblock engines get worse MPG than most of the 5 cyl models. Volvos are just not optimized for fuel economy - the 850 NA versions probably get the best MPG of any Volvo ever made (and still terrible city MPG).

Now if you figure out how to drop a 90's B22 from a Honda in there you might have the best of both worlds. My B20 used to get ~30 mpg city.

Seems like an aweful lot of work with debatable gains....If you want MPG's diesel is the way to go, even though the fuel is more expensive, its more than offset by the economy it offers. As to what motor thats the tough part. A recent VW or Toyota TD offers good punch, but by the time you are done, you might be better of with one of those cars!!!
