So, I have found out the hard way that 2001 and 2002 s60 transmissions don't last. Oops.
I am faced with a decision to junk the car or put a used transmission in. I'd rather not put another 2002 transmission in - as I know they have problems. Is there any year interchangeability? For example - could I put a 2004 in a 2002?
BTW, how long does my car have if I am getting a harsh engagement from park to drive and reverse to drive. To hard to say. Or could it last another 25k miles?
Transmission interchangeability by model year for s60
MY 01/02 are compatible, in which case you'd likely be throwing good money after bad by purchasing used. 03/04 won't work and neither will 05 onward. Some of the 2000 70 series cars used the same transmission, but for some reason I think they won't work, someone else can chime in on that. There are many threads on this forum about this issue. Good luck.
I looked into this for a long time and came to the conclusion that rebuilding the one that was in there with a new valve body was the best bet. These transmissions last maybe 120k with average maintenance.
The electronics are different in the 03+ transmissions and I haven't found a single thing describing how the two could be mated. It WOULD be nice, the 04s run about $450 bux used.

Beginning with MY '01 they are 5 speed and use JS3309 fluid.
Not that it would help the original poster anyway, but I was thinking certain 2000 models were available with the 5-speed auto trans.

2000 NON turbos and 2000 V70R have a 5 speed automatic
GLTs have the 4 speed.
Think about it.
2000 really was the 1st year and they're about as bad as the 2001s, actually more like 2002s as they did not have the stop neutral function
I have two 2000 V70Rs.
I just replaced the valvebody in mine (32,000 miles!!!) and my other one with 90K is about to let go.
Both were flushed at very low miles (22K and 45K respectively) with drain and fills every 15K miles thereafter.
Doesn't seem to matter much, luck of the draw
