Rubber Dust Shield between the axle shaft and hub bearing?

Post by da7 »

How does it look like? Do I really need it? Because I noticed it's got a mention in the Volvospeed website, but I don't notice one when I have taken mine off, so I was wondering if that was the reason that my last bearing went bad?

How does it look like? Is there a part number? Should I put one back on?

I'm not real sure what you are asking about. The only rubber boot in that area is the boot on the CV joint and it is critical. You can replace the boot but it is often easier and more effective to just replace the axle if the boot is missing or torn and it has been for a while.

There is a metal dust shield behind the brake rotor that is in the vicinity of the hub and there is a plastic "gravel holder" on the top of the OEM control arms. I can't think of anything else in that area that could be called a dust shield.

Some volvos have a lipped seal ring that sticks on the outer CV joint and sort of seals the back side of hub bearing. can't recall seeing them on any P80.
I think it is a P2 piece but I do not think it is 100% on those either.

hi Ozark, thanks for the quick reply, I know the cv boot, that's what i've just replaced together with the hub bearing, I know what you mean by the gravel holder, which I've broke trying to get the control arm off the sub frame... :D I also know the metal dust shield behind the rotor, which is not what I meant, so I'm not too sure either, but I've done some searching and even this post mentions it...

here is the volvospeed link it mentions it in the last paragraph...

hi there, anybody got any ideas regarding this rubber dust shield? It's not mentioned in the Haynes manual and I didn't see it when I dismantled the parts.... coz if it's not necessary, I can put the car back together again.. :D thanks in advance..

I have them on my 2000 XC. They are not critical, but are there for a reason. They prevent dirt and road grime from accumulating on the wheel speed sensors and in the hub area. The hub isn't in danger though, since it's a sealed unit. Honestly, not having them probably won't cause any issues... but personally I'd rather just have them on!

Easy way to put them back on without a total tear-apart:

-Remove wheel
-Remove axle bolt
-Remove top spindle bolt
-Loosen lower spindle bolt
-Remove 10mm ABS speed sensor
-Tilt spindle top towards you
-Push axle out of hub enough to slip on the rubber seal
-Put it back together, reverse!

I've gotten it down to a science now where I can take out an axle in about 15 minutes. It's quite easy!

Well then I wouldn't worry about it. Volvo probably has it, although they'll likely charge some absurd price just for one. Not worth it!

He does have a good point though. Checking it out on volvowholesaleparts.com they have that part for very little money.
