I bought a 2000 V70 XC SE almost 3 weeks ago with 146k miles for cheap and I fell in love with the XC70 family (very roomy, good driving capabilities under various weather, etc...). I'm currently in the process of doing all the preventive maintenance and fixing up of small problems to learn the most about the car.
Since this car was bought as a temporary measure so I can drive to work while my gf get the Yaris 2007 (that I'm currenly paying still until next year). As soon as I transfer the ownership of the Yaris to my gf and free myself from the contract, I'm looking to buy a newer XC70 to keep it for a few years. Since I always loved the 2001-2007 styling (I drove a S60 2001, S60 2.4T 2002, V70 2003 and S60 2004 for a few days at a time with Hertz car rental), I'm set to the XC70 but I wonder which model year has the least issues.
I know we must avoid the 2001-2002 due to a few issues (transmission and ETM come to mind). 2006-2007 is a bit expensive for my taste and I would rather get a older car in excellent condition for a fair price than a beat up newer car.
So my question is : What is the best model year to get and what is the potential issues pertaining to that model year ? I'm asking about issues since that will help me ponder if it is worth the risk, being good with the mechanic and having a good toolbox (that I'm adding with the V70 XC requiring special tools).
Advice for my next XC70 purchase

05-07 are the best followed by 03-04. Pass on 01s and 02s
What is your budget and I will tell you what you will be able to afford.
Older and also well kept are far and few between but they do exist, I managed to always find them.
Most Volvo owners consider them appliances and threat then as such!

What's that in US dollars?
Contact me, I'll find you a good one.
I've sold cars to Canada before, not oo big a deal

I'm not ready to buy yet (as mentionned above, I must first transfer my Yaris contract to my gf and that is a few months away still). However, thinking about getting a Volvo from down south where there is no road salt is very tempting... with the change rate at parity, you're looking at 15,000$ USD but I would rather keep 1000$ for various fees involved into buying and importing a Volvo from the US.
My question was more about knowing which one to look and learn more before I commit.
