Alternator Problems 2002 V70-XC
I had a power failure on my Volvo V70-XC AWD yesterday. I had noticed the battery weakening over the last couple of days. I checked and recharged the battery. The battery checked ok and is taking a charge fine. I am assuming it is the alternator. Is this something that should be done by a technician? I have changed many alternators in the past however never a Volvo. I have researched the replacement alternators on line and found 120-160amp versions with many brands. Bosch seems to be the original equipment. Do you have a recommendation on a brand or amp range? Last question is I don't have a maintenance book for the car and haven't looked for the alternator yet. Do you know of a exploded parts diagram on line or a manual that would be good for this car i.e. Chilton or Haines?
take the car to autozone and have them check the charging system and confirm that indeed the alternator needs replacing.
if the alternator is the culprit, some folks have just replaced the voltage regulator and you are good, but the alternator needs to come out to replace the regulator.

Went to 2 different autozones and they couldn't check the alternator. They said that the battery needs to be fully charged to check the alternator.

Does anyone know if someone makes a maintenance book for a volvo v70xc ??? I checked both Haynes and Chiltons sites with no luck.

Haynes does have a manual #4263, available from IPD and FCP. Look at the top of this page in the repair database and you'll find a wealth of information. Other good info is posted at the top of the individual forums.
A fully charged battery should show about 12.5vdc, with the engine running, voltage should be 14-15vdc.

For the price of a voltage regulator for a few more bucks about U$200 total you can get a lifetime warranty alternator at autozone.
To get the alternator out you need to disconnect the battery per the Volvo procedure. It is not to disconnect and connect back up. Remove the radiator fan assy, remove drive belt, remove upper ac compressor bolts, loosen lower ac compressor bolts, disconnect alternator wires, remove upper alternator bolts. There you have it. Glück!
