Volvo S80 Keeps Stalling

Post by Volvoken »

I'm wondering if other forum readers have had problems like this. I've had my car in the shop for 5 times now, where it keeps shutting down at highway speeds. you would be driving the car at 60 - 65 and it would shut down and you pull off and if runs really rough and then you have to shut down the car and restart it, finally had the throttle sensor replaced 800.00 and it worked great for 3 months. Now it completly shuts down while driving and the wheel locks, very smart on volvo part and the car might or might not restart. No one can find this problem. Truly all the forums reposnses are correct this 2000 S80 2.9 is a true lemon. Bought it new, here in shorts what has gone wrong.

88,000 miles
left rear shock took 2 years before Volvo replaced it.
both side front struts , 60,000
all oil seals replaced, low oil pressure. 45,000 miles
throttle sensor replaced. 80,000
door locks on both read doors replaced. left replaced twice right replace once.

Please anyone response back if your S80 has had any of these problems.

My 1999 S80 T6 has the opposite problem. The car runs fine at highway speeds, but if you deaccelerate too fast to a stop, the engine will stall. Needs about a quarter mile to slow down to a stop. Starts up fine afterwards.

Motoring - Electronic throttle causes headache for VolvoElectronic
throttle causes headache for Volvo

Gothenburg, Sweden - Cars that unexpectedly stall due to a suspected
faulty electronic throttle have caused a headache for Swedish automaker
Volvo.

Thousands of vehicles assembled between 1999 and 2001 may be affected and
could force Volvo to issue a customer recall. Models affected are five and
six-cylinder versions of the S60, V70, XC70 and S80 series.

Volvo Car South Africa has taken note of the potential problems with the
electronic throttle assembly on 1999 - 2001 vehicles, it said in a
statement.

As with all matters of this nature Volvo Car SA takes its lead from Volvo
Car Corporation in Sweden, and will contact affected customers should a
recall be launched.

Any issues related to the electronic throttle that were brought to its
attention, it promised, would be handled with the necessary consideration.

In Sweden alone some 120 000 cars may be affected, although the Swedish
Automobile Association hasn't noted any increase in this fault.

"If customers suffer from stoppages they should contact a Volvo dealer and
get assistance to rectify it," said Volvo Car Corporation spokesman
Christer Gustafsson.

He added that Volvo Cars, owned by Ford, is still considering whether it
would recall cars or extend its warranty.

In the US about 300 000 vehicles are estimated to be equipped with the
electronic throttle in question, although the problem seems mainly to have
affected Volvo owners in California.

Authorities in that state were said to be urging Volvo to extend the
warranty on these components.

Media reports said that in one year Volvo spent some $13.5-million (about
R80 million) as a goodwill gesture cleaning or replacing 27 200 throttles
on traded-in cars.

Classic symptoms much like described in this forum have attacked my 2000 Volvo S80 T6. The car would shut down at highway speeds and take about one quarter of a mile to stop.......VERY DANGEROUS>...if you are enveloped in a highway lane. I just moved to West Palm Beach, FL this past week....so I really have no choice but to go to the Palm Beach Volvo Dealer. The damage.........$1,102.00 for a Throttle Body Module. I have read in this forum where Volvo has provided new or cleaned the Throttle Module for $0.00...Not the case here. If anyone has experienced the same issue please lets converse. Further, if folks out there know of a class action..please let me know..or even better a RECALL of any kind to take away the sting of this repair...... please let me know!
