Anyone a fan of real-time strategy games?

Post by matthew1 »

In the mid-late 90's I loved Command & Conquer (and its spinoff Red Alert) and Warcraft. Now I'm a fan of Starcraft II.

I think the demands of combat and combat strategy, combined (in real time) with the demands of economics and resource allocation are something that puts it above -- in my opinion -- the demands of other types of games. Not saying Galaga isn't fun :) , I'm just saying the requirements to be in the top 100 in the world in SC2 (there are several leagues) are very high.

HAH! I was just playing that game earlier today as a matter of fact. I love that game - even moreso now that I have a laptop that can play it at more than 1 frame per second in the action intense scenes.

Red Alert was awesome as well. A few friends and I actually got together the other night and got a case of beer and played Age of Empires III til like 4am in a good old fashioned LAN party. For two reasons - we couldn't figure out how to do multiplayer connect behind different routers and secondly, because, well let's face it - we're all nerds.

I mostly play FPS games anymore when I've got time to.

However, Matt if you're one of them level 80 World of Warcraft players, I will never talk to you again. We lost so many friends in college that became addicted to that crap and never went out and did anything anymore after they started playing.

I purposely avoided WOW. I knew I'd love it. Still, to this day, I've never sat down at a machine running WOW. I consider that one of my little accomplishments in life.

I've transitioned from playing SC2 to watching SC2. I know, strange. But when you play at a level -- on an arbitrary scale -- of 4 or 5, and you can watch (sometimes live tournaments) players who are 95-100, for me it's more entertaining to watch.

I discovered casting -- SC2 game replays narrated by casters. Most are viewable in 720p or even 1080p resolution. My favorite is HuskyStarcraft. At times he's the #1 YouTube user as measured by # of subscribers. Yes, you read that right.

(Now the puzzle is coming together for MVS regulars: SC2 + family = Matt's not getting much done here.)

In case you're wondering, I spend about an hour a day answering emails about MVS... primarily users who cannot log in, didn't get MVS email, thanking donors, etc. That gets preference. Then comes client work (if any). Then comes re-writing topic titles*, then comes browsing the MVS forums to ensure idiocy is kept to a minimum or eliminated entirely**, then comes working on MVS6, the next version of this site -- design, functionality and more. That's my working day.

One thing that is absent from that list now is tuning the server. I found an fantastic server admin. Email or PM me if you need a trustworthy, knowledgable server admin. He took a lot of work off my plate -- work that I wasn't good at.

* "Seats" -- titles like that make me want to pull my hair out. Is that ALL the user can come up with?
** The MVS Moderators do most of this, and if you're a moderator reading this I owe you a big THANKS. If you're not a moderator reading this, please take one minute from your day and send a Private Message to a moderator thanking him for his work making this place look like a library, not a trash dump.

I am with you Matt, a friend of mine about a year ago sent me a few week or month of WOW and I was dumb enough to start playing. That game will consume your life. I finally was able to stop playing when I hit level 20 and got to busy to jump back in. Unfortunately, now I don't seem to play any games. I played SC2 a little bit but I actually still like SC1 better.
