'97 Volvo 850 for sale in Nashua NH, needs work

Post by takane2 »

So I've decided it would be more economical to buy a Civic than finish fixing up my 850. It is a sad day. As soon as I am satisfied that my Civic isn't a lemon I will be selling(or junking) my 850. Figured I would see if anyone on here is interested. It is a base model 850 with an auto tranny. It has around 177k miles on it(Odometer is broken for the second time but i can get the mileage from the cluster's computer. The title is branded as not actual mileage as 109999 is currently displayed).

I will post photos later today. Let me know if you want photos of anything specific.

Here is what has recently been replaced since i got it a little over a year ago:
-PCV system
-Spark plugs
-Timing and Serp Belt
-Rotor, distributor and wireing
-Air filter(have the old K&N too)
-Drive axles
-Upper motor torque arm bushing
-Jimmied a skid plate for older 850s onto it before last winter, the '97 doesn't have the mounting holes to bolt it.

Here is what she will need(I think):
-Brake booster(Idle rough especially when braked, in colder weather you could hear a slight hissing noise when breaking, plus as i discovered when test driving the Civic I bought the braking power sucks, it took me a minute or two to not brake ridiculously hard)

-Breaks have started squeling recently so the pads probably need replacing(they always occasionally did the usual Volvo brake squeak but it is all the time and sounds different now so i'm pretty sure it is the pads)

-Rear drivers side wheel bearing was sometimes screeching but stopped like 2 weeks ago, so even if you don't hear it it will need replacing.

-Rear suspension bushings.

-Something is up with the front end, the steering wheel is not centered (to the right slightly) and it pulls slightly to the left. I've had it aligned twice since it ended up like this after getting new front tires no dice. When I went back to the last place i got an alignment when i discovered it wasn't fixed they suddenly decided to tell me that my driver's side camber was at 6 degrees, don't know if they made that up to cover a shoddy alignment job or if it is true.

-Probably will need new motor and tranny mounts, they look worn and things are vibrating and i get a jerky shift.

-Needs antenna mast.

-Odometer gear broke again. But you can get the mileage from the cluster with the circuit i posted a while ago. It is probably at around 177k by now.

-Will need new rear tires soon, outer shoulder is worn down on both rears but the rest still has tread left.

-AC doesn't work.

-ABS doesn't work the 5mm tork bolts heads are stripped and i was terrified of the thought of grinding them with the brake lines so close.

-Some of the speakers are somewhat blown as PO's son installed a aftermarket radio.

-The power steering lines are kind of rusty.

-The only place on the body that has rust are some small pits on the hood and grill area, I've fixed some of them. Also there was a little rust below the airfilter, I sanded and re painted it but wanted to redo it better this spring.

Anyway it runs fine other than at idle and even then it isn't super rough. Mostly it is the suspension issues that are making me sell it, parts are pretty expensive.

Would make a good parts car or project car.
