Have a 04 XC70 86k. This is our 6th. of 7th. Volvo. 122,145,1982 245GLT, 1985 245DL, 2000 XC70, 2004 XC70, 2006 XC70
About 3 weeks ago the transmission started to "flare" when shifting 2nd. to 3rd in D mode. Momentary hesitation and then a harsh grab. Same going down from 3rd to 2nd. Took it to dealer. He replaced fluid, verified most current software, ran adaption. Now it is harsher than before.
Dealer says that next move is to replace transmission! $4,800!!
He talked to his tech. and he said that replacing valve-body is an option but wouldn't fix this problem.
Help???????
About the same time the flaring started, I have to stand on the brakes, going about 40mph, because some fool coming the other way turned left in front of me. Don't know if that is related??
At 53k the TCM transmission control module failed and was replaced. Some hard shifts associated with the failure.
Any suggestions would be welcome!
Jim

A new dealer perhaps?
At those miles a valvebody could help
Even though it's out of the year and VIN range try a new B4 servo cover. For a $15 part and 40 minutes of labor
it's worth a shot.
Did they do the drive cycle after the adaption reset?
they
Necessary, plus it can take up to 300 miles of driving for it all to smooth out

Thanks!
What does the B4 servo cover do?? and why replacing it might it help??
Any idea what the valve body replacement runs??
I like the idea of another dealer. when I had the TCM problem their first diagnosis, based on the codes, was a bad sensor in the steering column!! I asked what sensor in the column could impact the transmission! Common Sense?

2-3 and 3-4 shift flares
I buy wholesale so I'm not sure of a retial valve body
Plus or minus a grand for the V/B plus about 3-4 hours labor, a heck of a lot better than $4500!
Where did you say you were located?
