Hi all, I want to check with you on attacking a 1996 960 slight misfire. The car runs great. No problems at all accelerating. What I have noticed though is when at idle, after fully warmed up, you can see and feel the tachometer wavering about 100 rpms. There is no worry that it is going to stall or stop running and the idle is at the range it has always been. So I could live with it but it is really irritating to me.
Here is my plan of attack and this is what I want your opinion on.
1 - Replace sparkplugs. I don't think the ones I have in there are too old but I am thinking that this would be the cheapest and easiest thing to try first.
2 - Replace wires. I don't know if these have ever been replaced.
3 - Replace coils. Same as above.
4 - Test and/or replace IAC (Idle Air Control).
What say you all? I am hoping this is a simple ignition issue but I am all ears for other possibilities.
Thanks very much,
Jim Lee

Before embarking on a spending spree have you checked for fault codes?
If no codes are present then your plan of attack sounds good.
Can you also confirm that the engine idles at 100rpm without stalling or stopping?
Bill.

Thanks Bill. No codes and the engine does idle at its normal rpm which I cannot remember right now but it wavers about 100rpm from that good idle. I am cleaning out the IAC and then remove and check the gap on the plugs or if they look like they need replacing do that.
Any recommendations for a specific plug for this 960?
Thanks,
Jim Lee
