78 242 Starts but.....

Post by J-Town Briks »

Hello I have a 1978 242 GT That seems to be giving me a fuel problem.

She starts up, after some effort, runs about 5 to10 seconds then just stalls :!:

I've done:
fuel pumps
injectors
Distributer block
Pressure regulator
Frequency valve
Accumulator
Ign. mod.

Any body have any ideas
Any input is greatly appreciated

Have you checked the fuel relay?
It sounds like they're only running during cranking.
Try a test light on them, that you can watch while you try and start it.

Is it dying rich or lean? You can tell by the smell.

she is dying rich. Wreaks of gas after stalling

but the fuel pumps remain running for about 3 seconds.

Could that still be the relay?

Nope, if the pumps are running than it's not the relay. Since on K-jet, the fuel relay is wired off of the coil (I had to learn this the hard way while wiring up my MegaSquirt), it means that at least the coil is firing, and since it's running, it means you're getting spark.
Now it gets nasty. The problem lies somewhere within that nasty voodoo known as K-jet. When mine bombed on me, I just ripped it out rather than digging into it.
Have you checked your O2 sensor? It shouldn't be enough to make it stall rich, but it could be a start.
Also check cam timing, when mine was off a tooth it gave similar symptoms.
Check the rubber boot around the K-jet metering plate, sometimes it likes to leak. Again, that shouldn't be enough to make it stall, but it could be a number of minor things adding together.
I would suggest starting to dive into your local shop manual on K-jet, if none of these suggestions help. Sorry, I feel your pain. :?
