Synthetic Oil opinion needed...

Post by The Blue Whale »

I have an 06 xc 90 with the 2.5 turbo.

I am going to start using synthetic oil next oil change after reading how it helps with the clogging up of the PVC system and because of having a turbo.

My question is will I be able to go longer than 5000 miles between oil changes? If so how long? 7500?

Thanks in advance.

the 2.5 is very easy on oil. I would have no issues with doing 7,500 intervals using Mobil1 0W-40. Great oil.

Would you suggest that oil in all climates and for all makes? In the Midwest, this isn't something you will typically find at the local parts store. 10w30 and 5w30 are more common.

Ill go with JDS, Amsoil run in all of mine, 5W30 the "OE" line. I do 4k OCIs on the cars and once a year on the truck (about 2-3k). The OE line is set up to follow manufacturers suggested OCI. if your going to delve into Amsoil, become a preffered customer. I pay below retail, even with shipping. (disclaimer...I do not work for or recieve any compensation from Amsoil, nor does anyone I know personally or am related to)

I've got a 2005 xc70 with the 2.5t engine. I change my own oil and I use Castrol Edge 5w30. Castrol claims a 15,000 mile oil change interval, but I go with 7500 miles. I don't tow anything and I don't drive too hard. The engine doesn't use oil and I have noticed that the dipstick is less "varnishy" now that I have switched from conventional to synthetic oil. I hope this helps.

If you have been using mineral oil you might have got some harmless residues / crusts in your engine.

Synthetic oils have got additives to avoid these residues and get and keep them in solution.
If you go from mineral to higher grade synthetic some residues might just come off in a bigger piece rather than going slowly back into solution and then block small oil channels.
