960 Electrical Failure

Post by 960Rich »

Hi,
I went to test drive a 59,000 mile '96 960 yesterday. The following components didn't work: headlights, brakelights, moonroof, windows, shifter. We didn't test drive the vehicle. When I called back to the salesperson about 30 minutes later, he said he went to drive the car to the mechanic and said all componets were working....any ideas as to what may be causing this...could there be some type of intermittent electronic control module? Any idea of potential costs...I would like to own the vehicle but be financially and mentally prepared for a future repair if this happens again...
(fyi, it was raining...moisture issues?)
Thanks!

Hi,

Apparently, the problem was a short in the ignition switch assembly.
With slight movement of the stering column the problem would appear/dissapear.

The brake lights were a separate problem.

exactly right, the brake lights should light up when depressed regardless of key position. Sometimes a short in my ignition switch acts as though it sticks in the starting position - the car has started the key returned to ON position, but power accessories stay in disabled mode. It works again next restart :-)
