The summer is coming to a close and we need to get a few more of these drives in! So right on the heels of our Estes park drive comes my favorite, the Gore Pass drive. I'm thinking this year we could mix it up by going over Berthoud pass on the way up, so it's not all freeway driving to get there. Also, it's two lanes on the way up, so no Harleys to get stuck behind in the twisties.
So the plan will be to drive up, and stop in either Winter Park or Granby and find somewhere to eat lunch. I'll ask a friend who lives up there if he has any recommendations, I'm open to suggestions from the group as well, if anyone knows any good places. Once we eat, anyone who only wants to make it a half day can turn around, but anyone in for the whole day will take off for the real treat, Gore pass. We'll take Highway 40 from Granby to Kremmling, and then just north of Kremmling we turn left onto 134. That's the fun road, then we turn south on 131 which is also fun but has more traffic, where we will end up on I-70 back to the city. I've attached a map of the proposed route, starting from Idaho Springs.
This is a long drive, but it's worth it for those who want to push their cars beyond what we can do on normal drives with traffic. I've done this drive twice, and both times we were able to go from one end to the other without being slowed down or bothering anyone, it's very nice and fun. So come one, come all!
We should meet at 8:00 AM in the Target parking lot at Colorado Mills in Golden, the same place we meet for the Golden cruise. Just east of where I-70 crosses Colfax. We'll take off between 8:30 and 9:00, and should be back in town no later than 5 PM.
Hope to see you all there!
