O'Reilly "Full Synthetic" motor oil $19.99 FIVE quarts

Post by matthew1 »

Just got the flier in the mail today. It comes with a "MicroGard" filter, but I'd toss that for a Mann* filter. Note that's five quarts, not a gallon (4 quarts). Also note that five isn't quite enough for Turbo five cylinders. You'll need one more. It might be enough for N/A motors, please check your owner's manual.

These generic brands are often name brands, just with different packaging. In my opinion there is no way a small retail chain has an oil company produce a unique product just for them. I'd bet it's Mobil 1 or Castrol Synthetic.

I believe O'Reilly is a sister company to Checker, so you may have the same deal there too. Your mileage may vary.

* bought from IPD, OEMVolvoParts.com, VolvoWholeSaleParts.com or of course FCP. MVS sponsors. They're hard to find locally outside of dealers. I bought five Mann filters at once for my 850 a couple years ago from FCP, so I still have a couple left. Nothing like having a consumable on-hand when you're working! Tell them I sent you please.

Who do I see to become an honorary US citizen so I can enjoy some of the perks available over there?

Mobil 1 in the UK is £45.36 ($75.04) for 5 litres which is the equivalent of 1.3 US gallons. I have seen there is a connection between Mobil and O'Reilly in Nascar so you are probably correct in thinking the oil is Mobil.

There are a few oil packagers that most of the branded oil companies and store brands use. Shipping is far cheaper if local distributor is used. I'm not saying that the oils are exactly alike but they are not all that different either. If you use a synthetic meeting the car maker's and API and ACE specs then you are getting a damned good oil at the very least. The oil companies can certainly spec something better and I guess some do.
Oils use to be like barbecue, a lot of different recipes and some not so good. Nowadays oils are more like bagged sugar, the least good stills sweetens your coffee very well but maybe is missing some additive that keeps it from clumping in the bag.

The best may have some additive that might mean something if you do EXTRA long drain intervals like 30K oil changes.

It's not Mobil. It is made by Omni Specialty Packaging (otherwise known as PureGuard) with base stocks from Exxon/Mobil and Shell.

...with base stocks from Exxon/Mobil and Shell... what does that mean?
