Hello. I'm a newbie to this site, but a member on other Volvo forums. I recently had a '00 S40 that was involved in an accident (my wife is fine, car is totaled). I received the insurance replacement money and have been shopping for another S40 to replace my old one. Long story short, I found THE ONE - all the options/recent service work and the original owner! Saw it, drove it, made the handshake deal on it last Sunday (no money exchanged, no contract written) for $3200. The car has 165K miles and is now having some issues since the owner has been holding it for me this week. She told me that she had kept having to put coolant in it every so often and that a hose looked weak, but I didn't put 2 and 2 together until this morning searching out this site and hearing back from another forum.
She took it to an expensive import garage, which told her that it would cost $2K to fix the head gasket. She wants to raise the price on me another $1000 to help re-coup her costs. I'm thinking about meeting her halfway at $3700 with the repairs done either at the current garage or one I help track down. If I were to do this repair myself, what am I looking at as far as cost, time, tools, etc.? I'm a novice mechanic (but could get help from a couple of friends) or I could shop it out around where I live and how much should I expect to pay her for the car and the shop for the repairs?
Thanks so much for the advice!
Josh
