I just purchased a used 2002 V70. Unfortunately, it didn't come with a roof rack and I would like to add one. I would like to avoid the Thule foot mount route and instead get the factory rails installed and add the Thule load bars and bike mount from there. When I look down on the roof, there are 2 silver brackets on each side in the rain gutter spaced out about as far as the attachments for a rack should be.
My questions:
Are these silver brackets for the factory rack? if so, is it easy enough for me to install without having to drill any holes? And, how much are the factory rails if I were to buy them and install them on my own?
If they aren't for the factory rails, any idea what they could be used for?
How do the factory rails attach in the front and back of the roof of the car?
Thanks in advance.

I just got a 2001 V70 - I want to do the same and noticed the silver brackets you are talking about. Any news on this? I thought you might know since you posted in June.

i don't know about the v70 but i assume it's similar. if the v70 is different nevermind...
i put factory racks on my 850 wagon. got them from an internet wrecking yard for 125.00 (750.00 for new at the dealer). they were very easy to install, the roof has threaded bolt holes in it. just pull out the plastic molding and bolt on the new racks. i think i remember having to cut the molding and piece it back in at the front and rear of the racks. and i put sealant in the bolt holes but i'm not sure if that's required.

I would think you could intall the euro rails on a v70. http://www.vlvworld.com has a great page on all the racks available with part numbers. They've on the pricey side but at least it gives you an idea of what you'll need.
