Trunk does not open with remote

1999 S80 Trunk not opening with remote. Dealer does not know if it a wire harness ($78) or switch ($124) so wants to replace both for $454. I asked if that came with a gun and a mask!! lol....Any ideas or help on how to figure out which it would be is greatly appreciated.

On our 96 850, I had to spray wd40 into the lock cylinder, handle and interior latch, once a month or so or the trunk would not lock/unlock with the remote, intermitantly.

As the trunk works off a separate button did they test the transmitter? If not you can take it to an auto parts store (call first) most have a tester so you can see if that button works. The door lock and unlock might work fine but the trunk button could be shot as it's separate.
Will the trunk unlock with the button inside the car? I don't know if it's manual or electric but I'm guessing it's electric. If the interior button is working that should indicate the harness and the solenoid at the lock are good.
