2000 S40 Starting Issue

Post by otis44 »

This is a friend's car do I don't know a lot about the situation. Basically the car left him stranded a few days ago after a 30min drive or so and the car had been setting for approx. 2hrs. The key would turn over, all lights power up, no warning lights or symbols but the car would not crank.

The car was hauled to a local mechanic who basically checked connections, the battery, etc. and removed the ignition switch and reinstalled. The car now starts fine. The mechanic's theory is the ignition switch although working now is in need of replacement as a preventative measure. My questions are:

Are the ignition switches prone to failure on this model? and if so can one be ordered vin specific that will be plug and play with the existing key?

My thoughts were this might be a pnp issue or other, but I really don't know. Any advice is appreciated.

I would check the starter. I was having weak starts until one day nothing. I took the starter to AutoZone to get tested and the motor passed, but the test doesn't check to see if it is extending so I took a leap of faith and hoped for the best. Worked great. Not expensive to replace and an easy job too. Probably much cheaper then the iginition switch and probably easier.
