need help aligning vvt 04 xc90 2.5

Post by jojor1 »

I'm getting ready to change timing belt, cam seals ect on my 2004 xc90. The 2.5 engine has vvt on both cams. I have ordered two manuals off ebay but they were not worth the plastic disc they were downloaded onto. I can't find a paper manual to buy no where. I have looked online for a couple nights and i have found multiple instructions on how to set the timing on the intake&exhaust vvt cams but they ALL say something different ( what to loosen first, turn this cam clockwise & this one counter clockwise, set this cam one tooth in front of the timing mark and the other cam 2 teeth in front ect ) I just don't want to tear it back down when it starts setting vvt dtc's. I have ordered the cam alignment tools. I just need the correct knowledge from someone that has done the job before. Thanks for any info

Basically, when everything is lined up and the cam lock tool is on, the VVT hub (ie the inner part) need to be turned as far clockwise as it will go. That's your end goal, there's a couple of ways to get there... At least for the exhaust cam, it might be different for inlet. Someone else can clarify.
Have a gander on the S80 board, myself and some others have attempted to explain this better.

Another alternative is to forget about replacing the cam seals, therefore no need to reset the VVT, as long as you use the cam lock tool.

Thanks, but I'd rather replace the cams seals while i'm right there. Its has 93,000 on it and i can see some dust collecting around them telling me they will probably give future trouble.

My personal opinion is that the cam seal leaks are largely down to excessive crankcase pressure. But you are right, its still best to replace them if you are halfway there already..
Any luck finding out which way the inlet VVT unit needs to be rotated?

No luck yet. It's frustrating, I would gladly buy a good manual if it was out there somewhere. I would love to buy the real volvo shop manual if i could get my hands on one. I'm sure it would be expensive but it's well worth it to me. I don't buy and sell cars often and will more than likey keep this one for another 10+yrs. I can't stand paying someone to work on my car,I get all mad when I have to pay for an state inspection ea yr. I worked as a Ford master tech for 7 years so I know what a good manual is and this person I bought a manual from online was a scammer. Heck the seller I bought from listed everthing from bumper to bumper. The manual did'nt cover 95% of what they claimed. Long story short I got scammed out of 55.00,I sent the manual back for a refund (got a delivery comfirmation)and never got a refund they just keep stalling & promising a refund until my feedback time ran out. I was totally not expecting that. I've bought over 100 idems online and always had a good experence until now. I guess I should of known the feedback rules and acted quicker (my fault). I guess theres allways a few bad apples. I bought the volvo timing belt kit and alignment tools last week online and everything went fine, of course I made sure it was not the same seller I had trouble with. But back to the volvo, I keep hearing about the pcv's clogging up on volvos like i think your referring to so I may replace that too while I'm in there.

2 cents worth:
if you just do belt now, could perhaps come across the knowledge about VVT in the 3 or 5 yrs it is before seals actually do leak.
?is your car one where the tensioner is supposed to be changed? mine is.

Jojor1;
I don't know if you read this, but it may help...on this forum, go to the repair database, select by volvo car model, select xc90, scroll down...after the last posting S/V70 Terminal repair, see the (older posts Volvo XC90 post), click there. Scroll down, see Volvo 6-cylinder Engine: VVT Cam settings. This might help you.

It may be required not for sure. I'm all about maintaince mainly because it's a interference engine. I got the genuine volvo 4 cam seals, t-belt,h2o pump, crank seal,tensioner and idler pulley all on one box so I'd like to change it all. U know I seen a posting where someone copyed some pages and posted them on the t-belt replacement of an xc90 . In one of the photos on the page there was one of picture of the t-belt and in the lower corner of the picture it said haynes( i'm assuming one of those copyright things). So I fugured haynes must offer a manual but that got me no where. This is like finding waldo. :!:

juan62 Thanks I saw it a couple days ago. It only talks about one camshaft on the 6 cyl. I'm not sure maybe the 6 cyl only has one vvt cam?. I'm pretty sure from what i can piece together there is a different set up on the intake vs exhaust cams on the 5 cyl.?
