I have a 2000 volvo s40. 90,000 miles. In May I had it @ the dealer because of check engine light being on and was told that I needed a transmission speed sensor. I had the part put on. The check engine light is now back on again and now I am being told that I need a transmission range sensor. Would you please tell me if the 2 parts are 1 in the same?
Thanks
transmission range sensor

Check out this page. I only see a vehicle speed sensor, engine speed sensor, and a temperature sensor. So my guess would be that it is the same thing. What CEL code/s are you getting? Maybe we can diagnose? If it is the same sensor, I would tell them they need to replace it.

They are not one in the same they are different. The part is also known as a pnp switch, netral safety switch etc. Sometimes the connector for the pnp can become corroded and have a bad connection which can set a CEL. Just yesterday a car had a code for pnp and all the tech had to do was disconnect and then reconnect, cleared the light, and so far it has not come back. Probably just got lucky, but its worth a try.
We sell it for $172.43. It's a one year only part, so if you do get one used make sure it is out of a 2000. Good luck.
