HI I just purchased a 99 s80 for my son and everything was fine, then the ABS module problem happened. I read through
all the post and they are great I had no problem removing the unit and getting a rebuilt one (sorry matt I didn't know you did them) It had all the symptoms no speedo/ Brake failure stop asap , transmission service all of them. I brought it to a volvo repair shop they pulled the codes and told me the module was bad and it would be 900 to replace it.
So with all the info i got here i did the swap and now I have no power at all when I try to start the car. I trun the key and all i get is a slight click but that's it even when trying to jump the car. there are no dash lights no radio no interior lights, is there a update needed to the ecm.
one note when I took the abs module out the cover on the wire harness was broken off and all wires exposed
thanks
Replaced abs module now no power
update I disconnected the battery nd checked it, it was at 12.2 volts which i believe is good but just to be safe I put it on a trickle charge this morning and now I put it back in and everything is good except that an srs airbag service urgent warning came up. any ideas?
I have the same message "SRS Airbag Service Urgent" on my control panel. I think that my problem is related to your problem.
My battery went completely flat. I took the battery out an out and trickle charged it back up to capacity. When put the battery back in, that SRS... message came up on the control panel. In my case I needed a new battery (it was only 10 years old - who knew that Volvo batteries don't last forever). I purchased monster of a battery (since it is in the trunk, the physical size doesn't matter) and installed a new battery, but the SRS... message is still on the control panel.
I have seen this same message being reported by folks who have swapped out radios with out disconnecting the battery (not a good idea anyway); also by people who have pulled the Positive battery cable before they have removed the Negative battery cable (also, not a good idea).
I am guessing that an electrical disconnect of some kind that affects the SRS-Airbag system is the problem. I've looked all over the internet for a cure and have only found out that if you are willing to by an expensive diagnosis tool (like the Autel - AULOLR, or the EU702 - make certain that it will connect to your Volvo - you might try to get one from some European supplier) or some PC-based software and a connection to the Volvo's OBDII connection, then you can reset the SRS... message yourself. I have also seen posts where people disconnect the battery, wait 20 minutes; then pat their heads and rub their tummies at the same time; then when they hook up the battery again all is cured. I can't see this working on my Volvo, but who knows.
A much better way is to find some (friendly) garage with one of these expensive diagnostic tools that would be willing to reset this message without charging a lot, and without insisting that something is wrong with your Control Panel, or the Airbag System - this would be a very expensive and unnecessary repair. I suggest that you find a garage that is honest, and helpful and disinclined to rip you off; and/or a Volvo dealer with these same qualities.
I have tried several other cheap diagnostic reset tools (like: "10 in 1" - I am still fighting with this distributor over this one - it is junk and doesn't connect as advertized) with disappointing results. I am now looking for that magical garage to help me out.
If the SRS ... message reappears on your control panel after being reset, then you just might have an airbag problem. If that, you have my sympathies, and it is really going to cost you.
I hope this helps.

I believe the SRS airbag light come on if the battery is not disconnected before certain jobs are done, just get a dealer clear it and see if it come back. I have a BSR scanner and it's very good at clearing these messages, very good investments
