Gas Tank Leak on 850

Just filled up my 93 850 at the gas station (about 14 gallons, had about 4ish left on the dial) and when I got home I parked it in the garage (55 degrees outside about 60-65ish in the garage) and an hour or so later I began to smell gas in the house. Went out to the garage and there was a ton of gas underneath my car.

Im not sure where its coming from but I took a picture of what I could see. Is there something up there I should be worried about when its running or is it possible I just over filled it?

I'd put my money on whatever is sealing the neck to the gas tank is leaking, beneath that odd looking circular clamp.

There is a recall for that. Call your nearest dealer, give them your VIN, and ask about "Service Campaign 140".

At the end of the day the dealer should replace your fuel tank and a variety of additional parts including the evap line elbows and filler neck gaskets and the fuel pump and fuel level sensor gaskets. All said they replaced 22 items, including the fuel tank on my '94. I just need time to schedule in the 2 '96s for the same treatment. The Platinum is not leaking yet but I think my son's N/A might be. If I can ever get him home from college for a week I will schedule him in first.

Have you called yet to see if it is on the recall list. They just fixed my 1996 850 two months ago for free.

Even though there appears to be gas above that area (gas filler tube)?

It will.

The loaner car policy differs from dealer to dealer. Some give you one for free but in our case they charged us $10.00 for a S60 for the day. I can live with that. I was out of town when it was scheduled to go in for the repair so the loaner car was a huge help. One of our other members got a loaner for free for several days while the parts came in and the repairs were made.

Is there any expiration on this issue or any recalls like that? My car is a 1993 with over 152,000 miles on it.

This recall actually did expire but Volvo, under considerable pressure I'm sure, extended it. Technically it never was a recall but rather a "Service Campaign". The difference is somewhat semantic but a "Service Campaign" doesn't make headlines like a recall does.

Service campaign is not done to NHTSA or EPA law. In some cases service campaigns may be initiated to address the problem and stave off a recall.
