V40 1999 cutting-out when idling

Post by gloster_man »

Noobie here - I'm tying to save a friend's car from the scrap-heap because of a few issues, but mainly the cutting-out which happens intermittently at junctions and lights. Her son's figured that keeping the revs up is good for it but she'd rather get it properly sorted - or it goes to the knacker's yard.

She's had the ICV cleaned, it starts and runs well, I'm wondering (from other posts) if the engine management system temperature sensor - in the thermostat housing - may be faulty.

Anybody had similar problems / suggest other solutions ?

Also the driver's door lock button doesn't come up when it's locked, so the door doesn't lock - I guess I just replace the door lock ?

Any codes getting thrown? That may help us start diagonising. Also, for the door lock, try WD-40'ing it. Mine were sitcking and that solved the problem. You many want to check that first before you go replacing and actuator.

Thanks, Choquy03. We haven't had the codes read yet - I know that we need to do that next. I've had a quote of £41 /$66 for an engine management system temperature sensor, but the service guy wouldn't recommend changing it without checking codes - or I could be going round-the-houses for ages.

And you never think of the simplest things - I'll try WS-40 on the door lock.

But it's chucking it down here now, so that's me done for today. Back on it in next few days, when I can find the time - lots going on at present.

Let us know when you get those codes read so we can get the car back up and running properly.
