Replacing various interior lights

Post by carlsun »

99 V70XC -- My PRNDSL is no longer illuminated. Is there a writeup on how to open the console to replace the bulb?

Also, on the dash the rear window defogger switch is not illuminating. Is there a writeup for that?

Thanks,
carlsun

This will work for your shifter light.

For the lights in the switches - all of them on the late '95 versions and on they just take 1/4 turn and pop right out of the back. The bases are unique and are dealer only. I have used the Radio Shack 272-1092 bulb soldered into the old socket bases to replace many of them. On the early '95 and earlier you need to disassemble the entire switch and then solder in the new lamp. They are tricky since all of the springs and contacts fall out as soon as you get the switch apart.

I'm gonna have to put a disagreement with the Volvo specific nature of these bulbs. Now I could be wrong and the 95's could be different but my 98 has what are called neo wedge bulbs, they are indeed 1/4 turn locks. I replaced mine with LED's full set for the dash switches for less than 2 of the incandescent from the dealership. The dimming switch that installs in the side took a bit of modification to aim the LED but other than that they were an easy replacement. Only stumbling block was trial and error finding polarity. Put it in if it doesn't work rotate the bulb 180 degrees and re-install.

I'm also bumping this with my related question.
I want to replace the LED's on the window switches. Anyone know if the power to these are already resistor-ed or if I need to find 12V compatible LED's to replace them with. Are they soldered in or can I just pull it out and drop in the new ones? I'm looking at the door switch repair post.

It looks like they are strait up LED's not soldered nor resistor-ed. I was unaware an actual 12v LED existed. Am I missing something here? I really don't want to have to take it apart twice just to get LED specs but it might be the way I have to go... might write up that too.
