Sunroof "Calibration" not working

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Sunroof "Calibration" not working

Post by Beachbum »

My sunroof rattles badly in the closed position, to the point that I have to close the sunshade to shut it up. Sure would be nice to fix it! Can you help?

Vadis shows that there is a sunroof "calibration" procedure but mine is not working like Vadis says it should work. I think this is my problem. If I can get the calibration procedure to work I think the rattle will be fixed. Everything else seems to be OK...sunroof is in the proper position in the closed position - the edges of the sunroof are flush with the roof as Vadis says it should be.

Vadis says to 1.) open the sunroof to the tilt position and release the switch, and 2.) push and hold the open button again for 5 seconds until the sunroof closes. BUT MINE DOES NOT CLOSE. It just moves upward a very little bit, like maybe 1/8 inch, but does not return to the closed position.

Vadis then says if the sunroof does not move back to the closed position, then to 1.) open the sunroof completely (slide it back all the way to the wide open position) and release the switch, and 2.) hold the button for 5 seconds until it closes. BUT MINE DOES NOT CLOSE. It just sits there.

I'm hoping someone with an S80 can do the calibration procedure and let me know what happens. It just might also fix a rattle that you might have. And any ideas why mine isn't working (not moving back to closed position) would be greatly appreciated!

The actual Vadis instruction are included.

Just curious, how are you getting it to close? Do you manually do it or ?

Volvo has a fix with four new screws that attach the sunroof panel to its frame. It solved my rattle.

The sunroof doesn't close, it moves towards close and then back up to full open tilt to signal the calibration point has been stored.
To assure it is full open tilt, push the switch until it stops in the tilt position and then release and depress the switch a few times and watch to see if it moves a miniscule increment with each switch cycle. If it does continue until it moves no more before pushing and holding it until it does its jump.

Thanks but I don't think this is my problem? My sunroof glass IS fastened securely to the frame with the 4 screws. I even removed those 4 screws and took the glass out to check things but everything appears to be normal. I adjusted the glass properly when I reintalled the glass so that it is flush with the roof on all 4 sides (in the closed position), and tightened the screws securely. There is NO play or looseness where the screws attach the glass to the frame so I don't think (?) it is something with the screws.

However, there IS play (movement) when I push up on the rear edge of the glass with the sunroof in the fully closed position. It appears to be about 1/8 inch of play and this is where the rattle is coming from. There is also play when I push up the front edge of the sunroof. The front edge also rattles.

The play seems to be in the "arms" that move the sunroof up and down. In the fully closed position, I would think the arms should hold the sunroof glass all the way up, tightly, so there is no play. That's why I'm thinking it is a calibration issue, because I think the computer should take up any slack in the arms when it "calibrates" the sunroof. And as I describe above, my sunroof calibration does not work as Vadis says it should.

PS -- Just for comparision sake, I checked the sunroof on our minivan and my son's car...both are completely tight in the closed position. No movement at all when I push up on the front or rear edge of the sunroof. And no rattles!

Any other thoughts or ideas appreciated...thanks.
