Wiring Diagram for Front Fog Light Switch

Post by MalibuLx3 »

I'm install front fog lights on my Volvo 240, and I've got everything in place, but the switch. I should arrive sometime next week. But in the mean time, I'd like to have everything wired up and back in place, so when the switch shows up, I can just plug it in and be on my way. My question is, what exactly do I need for the switch?

I already have:
12V coming into the switch
12V leaving the switch and going up front to the relay
Ground for the illuminated portion of the switch to show it's on

Are there any other wires needed on the backside of the switch?

Thanks!

That is all you need. Where are you getting your 12v coming into the switch?

Great, thanks Bill. I pulled 12V directly off an empty terminal on the fuse panel. Fuse 13 to be exact, which appears to be for heated seats...which I don't have...

Now I just need to figure out what lights I want to use! I thought I had it figured out, but decided I'm not sure I like the under-the-bumper-rectangular-light style. Now I think I'm leaning towards the above-the-bumper-in-front-of-the-grill-round-light style instead.

Even though I can't make up my mind, at least I've got all the wiring done and all I'll have to do is mount the lights when I figure out what I want!

Good choice for the power source. Fuse 13 is rated at 16 amps so, depending on the size of the bulbs, you may need to reduce that. Usually the bulbs are 55 watts so a 10 amp fuse would be enough.

When I had my 240 and 740 I mounted the fog lamps above the bumper. I used round lamps to offset the rectangular headlights.

I actually wired it up with a relay, so that wire is just my control wire for. I have another 12V wire, of a thicker gauge, fused directly at the battery, which also goes to the relay, to carry the load of the lights.

Thanks for your help Bill, I appreciate it.

Do you happen to remember what size lights you used? I really like this look, but I'm not sure what size lights they used. They look smaller than the typical 6".

You mentioned the relay in your first post otherwise I would have been pointing out the need for one.

I used 4.5 inch lights so I didn't stop too much of the air going through the grille. Those in the photo must be driving lamps as they don't have the fog light glass and he has fog lights lower down.
