740 update - a hose????

Post by Ruth »

Could it be that simple!!!??? Okay...I got no response to my message, 10 looky-loos and that's cool. So...I went out (yes I'm a girl and no, I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing) but I went out anyway (because I'm tired of getting ripped off by mechanics) and I started looking around and ....yo....I found a loose hose, actually it was connected to the radiator with a um, let's see, some kind of a plastic tube thing that broke off, half in the hose, half on the radiator. Right exactly where the steam was coming from yesterday. So....what now! By a new hose, or maybe not, maybe just need the little plastic thingie that broke off. I'll get this figured out with or without help!!!! :P

never saw your original message- sorry!

i'm not familiar with the 740s, but it should be a simple fix, though you may be forced to go to a dealer for the part.

i didn't find anything on eEuroparts.com that looks like it would be the culprit, but if it's plastic, it's likely not a part of the radiator but a coupler of some sort.

Yeah....it could be that - first of all, the hose is fine. Let's see if I can explain this...the hose goes from the whatever to the radiator, right? right. There's plenty of room to hook it to the "whatever" side, that's easy. The radiator has just a small lip that doesn't appear to be able to hold the hose w/clamp, at least not very securely. So, it kind of makes sense that they needed to put in a coupler(?) previously mentioned by the other guy...to make that connection more secure. Does that make sense??? :?

Hi Ruth:

I just read both of your posts and also had a look at the response which included the picture of the radiator. I think I know what your problem is.

The original equipment radiators in these vehicles consist of a metal core in the center, which air passes through, and plastic tanks on either side of the core where the radiator hoses attach. When you look at the picture of the radiator posted by the last fellow, you will see two large round hose nipples, one on the upper left hand corner and the other on the lower right hand corner. The upper and lower radiator hoses (the big ones) slip over these nipples and are clamped around them. Based on your description, I suspect that one of the plastic nipples has broken off the radiator tank, causing water and steam to escape. I have heard that these are the weak points of the original equipment radiators and the breaking of nipples a common problem. It is time to replace your radiator as you cannot repair the plastic pieces.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. There is an independent Volvo parts supplier in the city of Albany California which sells an all-metal replacement radiator for your car for less than $200. You can view their web site at "www.rprusa.com". Check it out and let us know if you have any other questions or comments.

I hate to say it, but I think you're right. I just looked at it again. The reason I didn't think it was a part of the radiator is because the actual material of the piece that broke off is kind of like a cardboard type of substance, in other words it breaks off rather easily....does that happen to plastic? Crap. So, $200 bucks plus labor???

no prob... and i have to agree with K-Maniac.

look into the all-metal version. it's $119.90 (free shipping) from eEuroparts.com - fcpgroton.com has them, but they're more expensive.

Thanks for all your help guys! I have been directed to a gal named Fran who is the queen of radiator repairs here in Milwaukie, OR. I'll go so her tomorrow and see what she has to say.

Thanks again! I'll be back again!
