2004 XC 90 gearbox fluid capacity

Post by Tiny Tim 077 »

Good afternoon

I have just done a tranny flush on my 2.5T and it was so easy thank you to all the posts/pictures on this site. Two questions though
1. What is the most accurate way to check the level of the fluid in the gearbox, really stressed not to overfill the box
2. What is maximum amount of fluid needed to fill the gearbox?

Thank you all so much for an amazing site!

Leave it low, bottom mark of all of them on disptick. GO drive it 15 minutes and then check and fill the just below the top mark of all on dipstick. The dipstick has a band marked off for fluid that is 40C and the other is for approx 90C. 40 C is a guess but driving it for a bit will get fluid consistently to 90C and then you fill to middle or a little higher on the hot band. Don't fill to highest as really hard driving will make even hotter and level will go a little higher due to expansion.
The amount of fluid needed varies. Drain plug out for 10 minutes usually takes 3.5 L. Drain plug out over night might take 4.5 L. The torque converter will drain out slowly to the sump when engine is not running and the amount that comes out from drain plug is variable with time. Get 5 L, put in 3 and run it for a few minutes and check and add to the bottom mark as above then go drive and come back and fill it rest of the way then. NO harm whatsoever from a nice 15 min drive with it at lowest mark, filter is fully covered at that level. DOn't go drive around corners FAST on that test drive as the fluid may slosh away from filter pickup when not up to full.
