The car - S reg (1998) Volvo S80 2.9SE

My car seems to suffer with BRAKE FAILURE STOP SAFELY ASAP messages. There seems to be no set pattern, some journeys are trouble free, some journeys the message is there from the moment you turn the key, other journeys the message flashes on and off throughout the journey. There also seems to be various degrees of failure,

(1) BRAKE FAILURE where SatNav map scrolls but the distance to destination is no longer shown
(2) BRAKE FAILURE where the SatNav map freezes
(3) BRAKE FAILURE where the SatNav map freezes and the speedo drops to zero

The Volvo garage spent 2 days on it playing diagnostics and found that the SatNav system was putting a lot of interference on the CanBus. When the garage tried to read the SatNav system

Just after I bought my 1999 S80 I experienced pretty much the same symtoms. All my warning lights were coming on at different times and I often had several lights on at the same time. I took the car to my dealer and they diagnosed the trouble as the :
1. anti-lock brake system module. $85.50
2. brake control module. $680.46
Fortunately, It was all covered by warranty.
It seems that most of those systems are directly a result of the ABS. Check with your volvo dealer. I haven't had any problems since then.

Ashley, are you in Europe? I believe in the US we did not get the S80 until 99.
Not a lot of Volvo S80 were ordered with the navigation system. Anyway, the NAV system takes information from the ABS/STC control unit.
99 and newer ABS units do not last as long as the 98 and older units, you probably read this already.
